Movie file formats.

These are the major movie file formats that we support:

  1. Windows Media movies (.WMV and .AVI file format)
  2. DIVX movies (.DIVX and .AVI file format)
  3. QuickTime movies (.MOV and .3GP file formats)
  4. REAL player movies (.RM file format)
  5. MPEG movies (.MPG and .MPEG format)

They have free players (movie viewing software) which you can download for Windows and Apple computers.

We also recommend the free VideoLAN player software which you can download from their web site.

Windows Media movies (.WMV and .AVI formats)

This is the movie format created by Microsoft, Inc. Their web site is here. They offer a FREE download of their player/playback software.

Some AVI files are in the DIVX video formats. If you only get audio playback but no picture, try downloading DIVX (see below) and replaying the file.

DIVX movies (.DIVX and .AVI file formats)

This is the movie format created by Divx, Inc. Their web site is here.

They offer a FREE download of their player/playback software. Some .AVI files are actually recorded in the DIVX format.

QuickTime movies (.MOV file and .3GP formats)

.mov is the movie format created by Apple, Inc. Their web site is here.

.3gp is the mpeg movie format created by most mobile phones.

REAL player movies (.RM file format)

This is the movie format created by Real Networks, Inc. Their web site is here.

They offer a FREE download of their player/playback software.

MPEG movies (.MPG and .MPEG format)

This movie format comes in several flavours - MPEG1 (VCD), MPEG2 (DVD) and MPEG4 (Internet/mobile).

There is not a single inventor and owner of this format - its was created by a group of individuals and companies over the years.
